Kamaiu Johnson sinks birdie on 18 to win APGA Tour Championship, sweep honors

SAN ANTONIO Kamaiu JohnsonHe hit a 97-yard shot from the bunker to a foot for birdie at the final hole. His 5-under 67 score gave him a one-shot win Tuesday in the Mastercard APGA Tour Championship. It made him the top player on the circuit that is geared towards minorities in golf.

Johnson won $50,000, which is the largest amount in Advocates Professional Golf Associations history. Johnson also won the Lexus Cup. Johnson was also the APGA Tour player and of the year.

He finished at 7-under-137 at the TPC San Antonio. Marcus ByrdDaniel Augustus and Daniel Augustus both missed birdie puts on the 18th green and tied for second.

Johnson, 29, won the Lexus Cup title and was granted an exemption to the PGA Tour Latinoamericas early-stage tournaments. He is now qualified for the Korn Ferry tour in September thanks to his Lexus Cup title.

Johnson stated that things have been trending in a positive direction and that he was happy to see it come together at the Tour Championship. My goal was win two tours this year and to take the Lexus Cup. I worked hard with my team to achieve this goal.

He has now won four APGA titles over the past three years.

Augustus and Byrd won $15,000 each from the $150,000 prize pool. Willie Mack, who won the Lexus Cup last season, came in fourth at 140.

The 12th tournament was the Tour Championship. TPC San Antonio will host the APGA Tour in this years partnership with the PGA Tour.
