After posting a round of 76, Garcia pulled out of the tournament. He was then photographed at Saturdays college football game between Texas (Texas) and Alabama (Alabama).
The DP World Tour handbook states that a player cannot withdraw at any point during a tournaments first round, or during play of any subsequent rounds. This is except for emergency reasons or medical conditions deemed reasonable by tournament directors.
ESPN confirmed Tuesday morning that Garcia had not given a reason for leaving the tournament, and that he could face a fine according to the DP World Tours general regulations for members.
The handbook stipulates that players must provide written evidence of their medical conditions within 21 days of their withdrawal. Players who fail to do so will be subject to a fine.
Garcias participation at Wentworth was already controversial because he was among several high-profile players to have defected from the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf.
