SAN DIEGO Sam RyderHis lead in the Farmers Insurance Open was extended to three shots with a 4-under-68 in challenging wind in round two on Thursday at Torrey Pines South Course. Jon RahmHe had a late eagle, three straight birdies, and a 5-under 67 on North Course to get below the cut line.
Ryder fought through the Santa Ana wind and the South Course with only one bogey to reach 12-under-132 and take a three stroke lead. Brendan Steele, who shot a score of 70 on the South Course. Tano GoyaAfter a 67 on North Course, it was two more shots back.
Santa Ana winds blowing down the mountains and out of the desert raked the course for most of the day with gusts of up to 30 mph. It sent leaves, branches, even a tumbleweed, onto greens, and cardboard trash bins tumbling down hillsides.
Rahm said, Yesterday was very simple, today was very difficult, after he won his first tour win here in 2017, and then won the 2021 U.S. Open at the blufftop municipal golf course overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Its never easy here on either one the courses, especially South, and when there are poa annua bumpy sands with this wind it can be quite a nightmare. So glad I made a few.
Rahm is ranked No. Rahm, ranked No. 3 in the world, is looking to win his third consecutive start this year. He eagled his par-5 fifth, and then he had three straight birdies. He had a second chance at par-4 seventh. However, his long putt caught the left edge. It skidded just a foot away.
Rahm said that after his disappointing first round, anything in 60s would be amazing. What I shot today is amazing. Im going on the golf course today to play a great round of golf.
Rahm, who won The American Express last Saturday, started on The Back Nine and opened with consecutive birdies. However, he bogeyed his third, and ninth holes. He was even heading into the par-5 fifth when he opened his run with an eagle.
The Spanish star stated that holes five through nine, with wind or not, are where you can get the most out of the course. Fortunately, Ive been hitting the ball really well. There is no difference between these holes and any other five or four holes you can choose throughout the round. The wind blows right through them all. After the second shot on 6, I felt a bit more aggressive and started to think about making birdies, rather than being cautious. This is easy when its blowing so hard.
Rahm, who moved from tied for 116th to tied to 14th on Wednesday said that the cut line was never in his mind.
He stated, I was trying to catch up to the leaders as often as possible.
Ryder, a 33 year-old player who has never won on PGA Tour, gained some distance after sharing the lead in the first round with Aaron RaiAnd Brent Grant. Grant was 6 under in a group.
It feels great. Ryder stated, Ive been telling myself to just embrace it. Its not something Ive been able to get out of. So just try to enjoy it. Its part of why we play. So just try to enjoy the moment and look around.
And Im just doing all of it pretty solid. It starts off the fairway for me, and I drive it well. My iron play skills are excellent, so I feel confident putting it in the fairway. I don’t think I missed many shots today. Although I missed a few fairways, the irons have been great.
