Mixed event for PGA, LPGA tours features 16 teams, $4M purse

The new mixed event, which will replace the QBE Shootout, will feature 16 teams of players from both the LPGA Tour (and PGA Tour) competing in a three day tournament for a $4,000,000 purse.

The Grant Thornton Invitational will be played Dec. 8-10 at Tiburón Golf Club in Naples, Florida, according to a release from the tours Wednesday.

Since 1999, when Laura Davies and others started the tours, there hasnt been an annual mixed-team competition. John DalyThe JCPenney Classics final edition was won by this player. The JCPenney Classic was played every year from 1960 to 1999, but it was cancelled due to a lack of interest by top players.

Jay Monahan, PGA Tour commissioner, stated that the addition of a mixed tournament to the calendar was a priority as we try to capitalize on the increasing interest in golf. We look forward to partnering the LPGA as they deliver first-class entertainment to our fans, and competition to the residents of Southwest Florida, which has embraced the PGA Tour for 22 years.

Last year, Nelly Korda Lexi ThompsonCompeted against Denny McCarthy Maverick McNealyThe QBE Shootout was won by the respective women. Other women have also competed in men’s events over time.

Korda stated in a statement that The Grant Thornton Invitational really focuses on being inclusive and showing people golf can be accessible to everyone, regardless of what way they play. This will be the perfect opportunity to do something to help grow the game and inspire next generation.

Tiburón Golf Club will continue to host the LPGA Tours season-ending CME Group Tour Championship, which is scheduled for Nov. 16-19.
