NEW DELHI — Marcel SiemHis long wait for a fifth European title was over with Sundays victory at the Hero Indian Open.
The last time the German won the tour was eight years ago, 116 days ago at 2014 BMW Masters. He finished second in the final 68, just ahead of his countryman Yannik PaulFor the victory with a 14 under 274.
42-year-old Siem was able to secure his card for the 2023 season at qualifying schools in November. He went into the final round 1 shot after overnight leader Paul.
After sinking a 20-foot birdie at the fourth, Siem was in the lead. Siem won another shot on par-five eighth. Siem also made back-toback birdies on the 10th & 11th to build a 2-shot cushion.
Paul birdied the 13th hole to join Siem at the top, at 13 under.
Siem made par on the tough 14th and saved par to take the lead. He then shot from 15 feet for a birdie at his next hole to regain the lead. He completed his round with three pars, adding a 3-foot par putt on No. 18 to win, just moments after Paul hit his birdie shot wide from 12 feet.
Siem threw down his cap and shouted wow!
He said, This means a lot since two years ago, I wasnt sure if my ability to compete… and now… Im a winner again.
Paul was second at 13 under with Dutchman Joost LuitenAnother shot in third.
