Thompson also recorded his first bogey of the tournament. They were not enough to slow him down. Thompson scored an 8-under 64 on Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West, one day after making consecutive eagles shooting 10-under 62 at La Quinta. He had three eagles and four birdies, as well as two bogeys.

The Georgia 23-year old who played college golf was at 18-under126, two shots ahead of Rahm who also shot 64 at the Nicklaus course.

Thompson stated, I just had some good numbers in par-5s and I was able to execute all my shots. I had some putts drop. It was nice to make some eagles.

Thompson stated, I think putting it in the fairway and hitting a lot greens and seeing lines well on my putsts is the most important thing. Just everything has been clicking these past two days and Im looking forward to trying again tomorrow.

Thompson will be playing the Stadium Course on Saturday. This course will host the final round after the 54-hole cut in the pro-am event.

Thompson started his round in a hoodie to keep warm in the morning chill. Thompson eagled the par-5 11th hole when he hit his 5-iron to approximately 15 feet. To regain his lead, Thompson had two bogeys at four holes. He then went on to score a string of three birdies followed by two eagles over five holes. His round was now 1-under and 8-under. He eagled both the par-5 fourth hole and the par-5 7th, hitting the green with a middle-iron and draining a putt approximately 20 feet each time. He then finished his round with consecutive pars.

Since 1983, five other players have made five eagles in a tournament of four rounds.
