ST. LOUIS Bernhard LangerHoled out for eagle starting at 76 yards on opening hole. Shot his age for the second year with a 6-under 65 to share the lead Padraig HarringtonIn the Ascension Charity Classic.
Langer was 65 on February 2. He scored a 64 in Chubb Classic earlier this year.
Harrington, the three-time major champ and most recent Ryder Cup captain, played bogey-free in Norwood Hills.
Ernie ElsJose Maria Olazabal Steven AlkerThey were among the group at 66.
In his first year on the 50-and older circuit, Harrington has two wins as well as four runner up finishes on the PGA Tour Champions. He is trying to be closer to Alker in Charles Schwab Cup, but Alker hasnt had many bad weeks.
Langer has won six times the Schwab Cup record, and even at age, Langer is still a two-time Masters champion. He won the Chubb classic early in the year, his 43rd career triumph, two short of the record held at the time by Hale Irwin.
Langer wants to get closer to the milestone that he only thinks about when he is asked.
Its a great feeling to be in that situation to have the chance to catch Hale Irwin. Langer stated that its not going be easy. But ten years ago, it wasnt easy. And five years ago it wasnt easy. Its still difficult. It was great that we won 43 and hopefully there will still be a few more.
Harrington is still adjusting to this environment. He was a latecomer in all three of his majors and feels his best when he needs to rally. He is among the best and longest on the senior circuit and the Irishman admits that he still struggles to win from the front.
I found that I was a better chaser then someone who was in front. The Champions Tour is a learning experience for me. Ive had some leads and I have to continue to learn. Its hard for me to believe Im 51 years old, and Im getting more mentally.
