Rory McIlroyIt was a slap on the face. James HahnAfter Hahn strongly criticized the PGA Tour’s new format for play in 2024, Hahn decided to skip Tuesdays player meeting.
Like, all you say is s—, and youre not even there? McIlroy spoke of Hahn. If your goal is to get informed and participate in the process, the fact that he wasn’t there was a slap in front of everyone.
McIlroys remarks were made immediately after Tuesdays news conference at TPC Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida, where he was competing at the Players Championship.
Hahn, 41 years old, criticized the PGA Tours plan for 2024 to change to a new designated event format. This was largely a response to the controversial Saudi-backed LIV tour that had enlisted some PGA Tour pros.
Golfweeks Hahn said that he hates the changes. Im going to say exactly what 99.99% of fans said about players leaving the LIV Tour. If our players simply said, We do this for the money, I would have much more respect for them. But they are trying to hide what they are doing and make it about sponsors and fans, and saving events on the opposite side of the field. Thats all BS.
This year, the system of designated events was in place to keep players on the PGA Tour. The minimum purse at each event was now $20 million.
The PGA Tour has reworked the tournaments. Each designated event will have 70 to 80 players and a guaranteed four-round play for purses of $20,000,000 or more.
Right now theyre just covering up their asses and saying everything the PGA Tour basically taught them to talk and try to make it not all about money when everyone knows 100 per cent its about more guaranteed cash being funneled towards the top players in world, Hahn stated to Golfweek. They have been talking about money for two years. Its hard for them to not say that its not the No. They are making these changes because it is very, very hypocritical.
Hahn hasn’t been victorious since the 2016 Wells Fargo Championship. He also missed 13 cuts since last years Players Championship. He qualified for this years Players Championship because he was 113th in 2022s FedEx Cup standings.
