WILMINGTON, Del. — One good break. One great shot. Thats Sunday. Patrick CantlayHe won the BMW Championship again for the second year, with a finish that was nothing to last years save for his clutch moments.
Another difference: He didnt win the No. The FedEx Cup Finale at East Lake in Atlanta will determine the FedEx Cup No. 1 seed.
Cantlays birdie-par finish of 2-under 69 was enough to give him a one shot victory. Scott StallingsWilmington Country Club
Cantlay said that he was happy not to play six holes in a playoff, referring specifically to his unlikely playoff win last season at Caves Valley. Bryson deChambeau.
This was the way it looked when Cantlay, Stallings and Masters champion were tied down the stretch. Scottie Scheffler Xander Schauffele lurking.
With two holes left, Cantlay decided to take an aggressive line to cut off a corner of a dogleg. He thought he was heading for a group of bunkers. The ball missed the last bunker and took a big leap over the sand to land in the first cut. It rolled out to 64 yards from the hole.
He stated, I thought hitting it that line, it would for certain be in a buner, It was an amazing break. It was probably one of my best breaks coming down the stretch. And you have to pay it off when that happens.
He did so, hitting a spinner using a wedge that skidded and stopped 5 feet from the hole for birdie. Stallings, in the group ahead, narrowly missed a birdie putt at the last hole for a score of 69.
Cantlay required par to win and fanned the drive into a bunker. The ball was above his feet, 158yards from the pin on a steeply pitched green.
He stated, I tried to slice a 8-iron as hard I could and got it to about where it was possible for me to get it. It was one the best shots I had all week.
His putt caught the cups lip, giving him a tap in, which was the easiest shot he had all afternoon.
Cantlay, who finished at 14.-under 270 was the first player ever to win the BMW Championship in consecutive year since 2007. There have been no repeats in any of the playoff events. His second win of the season moved him to No. He is ranked No. 3 in the world.
He played all four rounds alongside Schauffele and realized only later that he could have used some help from his best friend on the tour. Scheffler was moved to fourth by Schauffele (71) after he missed a 7-foot birdie putt at the last hole.
Cantlay would be the No. This would have made Cantlay the No.1 seed. He has a 2-shot advantage before the Tour Championship begins. Scheffler will now start 2 shots behind Scheffler. Scheffler missed a short par putt at the last hole which didnt cost his spot in the FedEx Cup.
Stallings is now at 238 starts, eight years after his last victory at Torrey Pines. And he played like the drought might be over. He missed four birdie opportunities within 18 feet at the finish, the last one just inside 10 feet.
The consolation prize is his first visit to the Tour Championship.
Stallings stated, That was our biggest goal for the year. Better late then never.
Stallings wasn’t the only one. Adam Scottis on his way back to East Lake. He was at Number. He was at No.77 in FedEx Cup when the postseason began. Last week, he tied for fifth to move him to No. 45.
Scott tied for fifth with a 71. He made an eagle on 12th hole. Scott also hit some outstanding lag putts at Wilmington on firm, crispy greens.
Scott was desperate to score a par on his last hole. He pulled his putter to the edge of the bunker and had to stand in sand to try to hit a first cut. He pulled it into a bunker and then hit a magnificent shot to tap in.
I guess thats what I like about the FedEx Cup playoffs. Scott said that you can scratch it all for the year and still have a few good weeks. Then, you get heavily rewarded by reaching East Lake and being among the top 30 with all the perks.
Aaron WiseHe scored a 73 and earned the thirtyth spot. He was one of four players to move into the top 30 for the Tour Championship. Stallings and Scott were followed by Wise. K.H. LeeOn Sunday, he scored a 65 to tie for fifth.
