An Honest Review of The Flightscope Mevo Plus

Table of Contents

I don’t often get to cover a product with its roots in my homeland. This Flightscope Mevo + review is a great opportunity.

Flightscope was founded in Somerset West, South Africa. It measured the speed of projectiles at first. They produce simulators and monitors for golfers, amateurs, and professionals four decades later.

This Mevo Plus review will reveal what data metrics it includes and how compatible it is with software. Plus, I’ll reveal how much floor space you need to operate the golf simulator indoors.

Finally, I’ll detail the factors that impressed and annoyed me to help you decide whether it suits you.

FlightScope Mevo+

It includes six iOS E6 Connect simulated golf ranges, 17 practice ranges, a mini game, and 6 iOS E6 Connect golf courses. 16 unique data parameters including carry distance, club head speed, ball speed, smash factor, spin rate, spin axis, spin loft, angle of attack, horizontal launch angle, vertical launch angle, lateral landing, shot shape, total distance, roll, flight time, & height.

Features

Modes

You have three options to enhance your simulator experience when you start a session. The simulators outdoor mode is intended for sessions at the driving range where unlimited ball flight is possible.

Indoor mode is for those who have a large garage or room. It requires 13 feet to reach the net. Short Indoor is the final option. This mode detects shots that travel no less than 8ft from the mat to the impact screen.

Doppler Radar and High-Speed Image Processing Unit

In order to accurately measure data, a doppler radar is used in conjunction with a high speed image processing unit. The portable device measures more than 16 data parameters to improve the efficiency and precision of each read.

You can also upgrade your package to include 50 metrics. These include full swing, chipping, putting, and more. I tested the standard edition, and it was sufficient for most golfers.

Flightscope App

The Flightscope mobile app powers the simulator and acts as your control panel. From here you can access multiple screens including 3D Trajectory, Dashboard and Table Screen.

3D Trajectory displays your chosen data parameters and ball flight in real time. This screen is useful for quick practice sessions or to relieve stress. The Dashboard displays all the data parameters as well as your averages for each club.

Next, the Table Screen displays historical data for each parameter of your bag. The screens bottom shows the averages, which show how your distance, launch and speed have changed since the beginning.

The video section is the final screen. It connects to your smartphone or tablets camera and records your swing. It displays the data parameters of your shot at bottom of screen and documents your video for you to share with your coach or on social media.

Views

The Mevo Plus offers three views when you watch your ball fly. Although I prefer the back view, it is not a preference.

The Side and Perspective views are also options. Perspective shows it from a golfer’s standpoint, while side view does not offer the best sighting.

Flightscope Skills Challenges

The Mevo Plus gives you access to Flightscope Skills Challenges. These are fun and useful ways to improve your game. There are many challenges that you and your friends can take on together. I enjoyed the Complete Combine setup where I can create my own custom games.

In the game that I set up, there were five targets. 100, 125. 150, 150, 175, 175, and 220 yards. It was designed to improve my regulation greens and cover my iron play. This is great practice for an individual and you can invite three of your friends to join the foursome.

Three rings are attached to each target. The black center circle, which is worth 5 points and the middle ring 3 points, is worth you 3. The outer ring only has a 1 point value. The player with the highest score wins after all challenges are completed.

It adds an extra layer of analysis to the Skills Challenges. It will show you how far away you are from your target and how it compares with a pro on the PGA Tour.

Bundle with E6

The Flightscope Mevo Plus includes the Basic E6 Connect subscription. This software subscription transforms your golf simulation experience by giving you access to 5 virtual golf courses as well as 17 driving ranges.

You can play the virtual golf courses whenever you have the time. The software displays every golf swings ball flight and data parameters so you can see if your strike is optimized.

You can also play one of the 17 virtual driving courses if you dont want to play a full round. It helped me practice with a purpose, as it provided targets and challenges to hit different shots.

Performance

Price

Flightscope released a high-quality golf simulator at a fraction of the cost of high-end models. It is still a significant amount of money for some golfers but I find it an affordable option as a simulator.

Although there are cheaper options available, they do not offer as much accuracy, insight, or entertainment as the Mevo Plus.

Data Analysis

The device measures 16 data points with the use of a hybrid technology that combines a 3D Doppler radar and high-speed image processing units. I have listed all parameters below, but the Mevo Plus covered speed, spin, apex launch and landing angles, distance and flight duration.

Mevo offers the option to upgrade to their Pro Package to get insight into 50 data metrics. This type of insight is not cheap. If you are a low handicapper or need to gain a deeper understanding of your swing mechanics, the Pro Package is worth it.

Data Measured

  • Ball Speed
  • Carry Distance
  • Roll Distance
  • Spin Rate
  • Spin Loft
  • Horizontal Launch Angle
  • Apex Height
  • Lateral Landing
  • Shot Shape
  • Club Head Speed
  • Total Distance
  • Smash Factor
  • Spin Axis
  • Vertical landing angle
  • Flight Time
  • Angle of Attack

Skills Challenge Entertainment

Flightscope Skills Challenges demonstrates a lighter side to the simulator, making golf more enjoyable for everyone. It can be used by serious players to improve accuracy, shot shaping and control, but it is also great for family members to learn the sport.

The variety of the challenges was what attracted me. I also loved being able create my own tests to fit each training session. I shortened the targets when I wanted to focus on short-game approach shots. To improve my skills, I increase the distance with fairway woods and long irons.

Bundle with E6

The E6 Connect Basic Package powers the entire Mevo Plus golf simulator experience. You have access to 17 driving ranges and 5 golf courses to practice and play on any day.

You can play 18 holes at home on the E6 golf courses. This allows you to keep your course fitness. I had to calibrate my launch monitor with the Simulator angle tool included in the package. Once I had sorted the angles, I was ready for play.

I switched to driving range when I felt like working on certain aspects of my game. Plus, it was fun to practice certain shots, such as draws, fades, punches, to increase my arsenal.

The Mevo + E6 Bundle is compatible with iOS 13 or Android 6.0 and later. This makes them accessible to all golfers.

Visuals

Flightscope allows you to view your ball in 3D from three angles. I found the Back view to be the most useful, but I didnt mind the Perspective view. The side view was not something I used as much as the Flightscope app.

Beyond the angles, I felt that graphics on E6 Connect as well as Flightscope applications were of the highest standard. This was obviously due to the excellent quality of my ultra high definition (UHD), projector.

Portability

The Mevo + is a compact launch monitor measuring 6.8″ x 1.2″ x 4.6″. The Mevo + is lightweight at just one pound. It can be carried in your golf bag to the driving range, or on vacation.

Works Indoors and Outdoors

The Mevo + is a versatile tool that can be used to hit into a net in your backyard, an impact screen indoors or bomb your driver at the range. The Mevo + has three modes that optimize its use in any environment.

The outdoor feature allows unlimited ball flight, and tracks your ball as you launch it into the distance. I spent most of the time operating it in an indoor mode, built for larger spaces, where you have 13’ between the mat and impact screen. In addition, it demands 8’ from the sensor to the mat.

Finally, Short Indoor covers chip shots with limited flight, reaching a minimum of 8’ between the net and strike zone is required.

Metallic Dots

Each Mevo + comes with 100 metallic dots that you can place on your golf balls. Flightscope has this additional feature that allows you to read indoor speed and spin more accurately. These dots must be applied to the golf balls. It will return inconsistent results, especially on high-impact wood shots and long irons.

Ceiling and Floor Space

Flightscope suggests a room that is 10’ wide and 21’ long to cover a full swing and the sensor requirements. You need 13’ from the net to the impact zone and an additional 8’ft behind the mat to set up the Mevo + launch monitor.

In addition, 10’ of ceiling height is required to swing your club freely on full shots. If the specs are too big to fit in any room of your house, you can either take it outside or use the simulator at the driving range.

What I Love About The Mevo Plus

Affordability

The Mevo + isnt the most expensive golf equipment. It is, however, a simulator. You get access to robust, accurate data parameters, indoor or outdoor functionality, and virtual golf courses.

It also comes with many challenges that will help you practice with a purpose, and take on your friends.

Indoors or Outdoors

Ive spoken extensively about the three modes available on the Mevo Plus. These allow you to use the simulator indoors and outdoors. This gives you instant feedback and enhances the experience.

Data Points

While some may be disappointed that the Standard Flightscope Mevo contains 34 less data points than the Pro Package I find it sufficient, especially for a high-handicapper.

Low handicappers may be more comfortable with additional data parameters. However they will cost an extra $1,000. However, your total is much lower than the premium brands golf simulators.

Compact Design

The Flightscope Mevo + launch monitors compact design makes it easy to transport between your home or the range. It weighs only 1 pound, making it easy to pack in your bag or backpack to transport while you travel from one place to the next.

Flightscope Skills Challenges

The Flightscope Skills Challenges, which allow you to create your own challenges, are next. This allows you to customize training sessions to focus on specific aspects of your game. For example, straight shots between 100 and 150 yards.

You can track your progress by adding points to your account after you have completed the challenges. I like the added bonus of being able show how far away I was from my target compared to pros on PGA Tour.

Bundle with E6

The Mevo + also gives you access to the E6Connect Basic Subscription, despite the fact that it is a cheaper option than the standard price. This subscription allows you to access 5 virtual courses and 17 driving areas to improve your swing mechanics, shot shape, ball striking, and more.

The E6 software is compatible with both Android and iOS devices, making it accessible to a wider range of golfers.

What I Hate About The Mevo Plus

Metallic Dots

Flightscope launch monitors require metallic dots on each golfball for indoor use. Although I understand their purpose, I find it unnecessary.

There is no additional cost for the metal dots as they are included with every purchase of a simulator. The device will deliver erratic measurements on full shots if you dont apply them.

Additional data parameters at a cost

Ive already spoken of the Flightscope Pro Package, which measures over 50 data parameters. This package is for serious golfers. However, you will need to pay an additional $1,000 to access these metrics.

It is still cheaper than the premium models of its competitors, even though it costs an extra $1,000. But, its almost possible to get a new set at that price.

4 Hour Charge

Next, I could do without the 4-hour charging time. I forget how long it takes to charge my phone after I use it. This means that if I set it up and discover there is no battery, I will need to wait for 4 hours. If you charge it with your laptop, it can last for 12 hours.

Target Alignment

To accurately display ball flight, shot shape, distance, and other data, calibrate your golf simulator before hitting the links. Each Mevo + includes a Simulation Angle Tool that helps you align your sensor with the impact zone to get the best results.

Overall Rating and Thoughts

Overall, I believe the Flightscope Mevo Plus is one of the most value-for-money golf simulators on the market. It measures a solid set of data parameters that provide accurate readings for the average golfer.

The simulator is affordable and provides impressive data metrics. You can also access practice tools, skills challenges and virtual golf courses. You can use the simulator indoors and outdoors to enjoy the simulation experience from your garage, or driving range.

The Flightscope Mevo Plus gives low-handicapper and mid-handicapper golfers a high quality device at a fraction the cost. You will be amazed at the value you get for your money when you compare it to a Trackman setup or GCQuad set.

The Flightscope Mevo + simulator is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a realistic, entertaining, and game-improving version of golf. You can take a closer look at the specifications and see videos of its performance. Here. Flightscope has also just launched the 2023 Mevo + edition. I look forward testing it and reviewing it for you over the next few months.
