Expert Review: Is Top Flite a Good Golf Brand?

Top Flite brand was one of the first boxes I received as a kid. It was more about the cost of the golf balls than the actual performance back then. When I was young, I was learning the game and Top Flite was very affordable.

The golf ball was a Top Flite XL. This is a standard for them for a long period. I didn’t think too much about this golf ball and whether or not it was high quality because I was new to the game and just happy to be playing.

One day my uncle tossed me a Maxfli ball and said, “try this.” It was an entirely different experience, and there began my interest in how different one golf ball brand can be from another.

I’ll share some of my experience with Top Flite through the years and try to help you decide if this is a good golf brand you should be using when you play.

Quick Facts about Top Flite

  • Callaway golf owned Top Flite once.
  • Top Flite has been a valued brand since its inception.
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods currently owns Top Flite
  • Top Flite is not for professionals
  • Top Flite can often offer solutions for both high handicappers or beginners.

My thoughts on Top Flite Clubs and Balls

Before we get into details about the Top Flite balls or clubs, I need to be clear about the fact some players will benefit and others should stay away.

Top Flite may not be the most premium golf brand in this industry, but that can create solutions for some and headaches others. It is important to understand what Top Flite does well with and determine if you are a suitable player profile.

Golf Club Sets

Top Flite’s most-sold products are the golf club sets. These sets are perfect for beginners, intermediate golfers, and even high handicappers. The best part about the sets is their value.

The bad news is the lack of feel and longevity.

You will feel completely different when you hold a Top Flite Gamer or Cleveland club in your hands. These are the main differences between technology and materials.

Top Flite does not do the same research and development as Titleist or Callaway. Top Flite is aware of its target market. They know that customers are looking for an affordable and easy-to-hit club.

Individual Clubs

Top Flite also offers individual clubs you can buy in addition to complete sets. The complete set is the best deal as it includes everything including the bag. Top Flite equipment is the best option if you’re looking for a driver or wedge.

Individual clubs are a great way for new players to try the game before making a big investment. This also makes it affordable for teens and young adults.

Expect average distance, good forgiveness, decent feeling.

Women’s Golf Clubs

The women’s golf clubs come both as a complete set and as individual club selections. This set is ideal for beginners or those who play only occasionally. It’s very lightweight, has graphite shafts, and encourages a higher ball flight.

There are many options for beginner golf sets for women golfers. This one should be considered from a value perspective. Most of the clubs are only sold at Dick’s Sporting Goods as this is their brand.

If you have been in the game a while, and are used to the feel and precision of Callaway, Cobra, or TaylorMade, don’t switch to the Top Flite golf club sets.

Junior Club

Top Flite’s junior clubs are my favorite part of the brand. With kid’s golf clubs, it’s important to stay with something affordable. Kids grow out of clubs quickly, and unless your child is playing in tournaments and events, the specifications and technology of the club doesn’t matter all that much.

It doesn’t matter what the fitting and height ranges are for Top Flite junior clubs. This makes it easy to pick a set for your child.

Each one comes with a golf bag, and it’s certainly enough to get any young child ready and excited about playing the game.

Golf balls

Top Flite’s most popular product is the golf balls. Top Flite golf ball are tough and can be difficult to handle. Based on my personal experience, this was true for many years.

Top Flite golf balls were available for those who have lost several balls in a round.

They have also tried to appeal to more golfers looking for quality and value over the years.

The golf balls are okay, but not great. The three-piece models such as the Gamer are far better than the value two-piece models.

Top Flite’s offset design and large sweet spot make it easy to forgive. However, when it comes to technology like tungsten weighting or AI-optimized center of gravity, Top Flite can’t compete.

Feel the difference

Top Flite’s feel is my least favorite aspect. The Top Flite is not the right choice if you want a club with a buttery smooth feel every time you touch it.

These clubs feel a little harsh. It mostly has to do the material selections and manufacturing. These clubs are not made from premium metals and are not forged. This is not a problem for a golfer who only plays once per month.

For the avid golfer, I would recommend something a little more refined.

Top Flite is a good distance technology. Will Top Flite fly as fast or as far as the TaylorMade Stealth? It is unlikely. Top Flite will not cause you to lose your distances. However, most golfers are comfortable with certain distances.

Combining Top Flite clubs with a distance ball will likely give you the best chance to get lots of roll and long distance. This combination can make it difficult to get a ball on the green where you want.

While Top Flite clubs can last a long time but are likely to be replaced in a few more years, they are very durable. The technology in Top Flite sets is very outdated and has a low resale price.

Top Flite clubs won’t break or become damaged after just a few rounds. Be careful about how often you play them and whether you plan to keep them in the bag for the long-term.

The initial costs of Top Flite’s golf clubs are very affordable. The Top Flite golf clubs are among the most affordable in the industry. Top Flite is worth considering if your primary concern is the cost of the golf clubs that you purchase.

Top Flite is also a great value for money.

Who should play top flite?

The Top Flite clubs are ideal for those who are not a regular player, new to the game or need a backup set of golf clubs for friends visiting.

Some high handicappers may enjoy the style of the club head and feel as though it encourages forgiveness, but it’s not always the best fit for higher handicappers.

The Top Flite golf ball is a three-piece option. You may be interested in the Gamer.

Not all Top Flite golf balls are considered “Rock Flight” anymore.

My Favorite Golf Club Brand

Top Flite is not my favourite brand for high-quality, impressive golf equipment. From a value standpoint, I can’t say that Top Flite is a poor choice. My favorite golf club brand is Titleist.

Titleist golf clubs are some of the most premium on the market. They have a great feel, high-quality materials and advanced engineering and design. Titleist also makes some of the best balls in the game.

Scotty Cameron putters are also manufactured by Titleist. This brand is my favorite because of its extensive product line and the high quality of each individual product.

Although I don’t always play Titleist, they are my hands-down favorite.
