WILMINGTON, Del. — Adam ScottHe felt that he was playing well enough and should see some improvement in his scores. This moment seems to have come at the right time.
Scott played a solid round Friday, with the exception of the 17th hole, where he made a double bogey. This gave him a 2-under-par 69, giving him a one shot lead heading into the weekend at BMW Championship.
Masters champion Scottie SchefflerAfter opening with three birdies straight, he cooled for 67. Jordan Spieths hopes of a bogey free round were crushed when his tee shot missed the fairway and hit the sticky first. His bogey earned him a 67.
They were one shot ahead of them, along with Cameron Young(68) Corey Conners (67).
Scott, who was 8-under 134, didnt know how much August golf would bring. He was No. He was No.77 in the FedEx Cup, but he wasnt certain he would make it to the BMW Championship until a tie for fifth last Wednesday in the FedEx Cup playoffs opener.
That was enough to ignite his passion and he now wants to make it as one of the top 30 players to reach the FedEx Cup final next week in Atlanta.
Im in great condition going into the weekend. Scott stated that he doesnt remember when the last time he led a tournament.
He won at Riviera in 2020. His last 36-hole lead came at Doral for the 2016 World Golf Championship, which was won by him.
I havent had my best stuff in quite some time. He admitted that it had been a tough battle. But thats just how this game works. Id like to make the most out of this position over the next 36 holes.
A quick look behind would remind him that this wont be easy.
Spieth has been solid over the two days at Wilmington Country Club with only one bogey. He missed the cut last week, and believes his postseason didn’t begin until Monday when he arrived in Wilmington. This is not about trying to erase bad memories.
After the British Open, Spieth decided to go to Baja Californias southern tip to get a break before the end of the season. One problem. When he returned to Dallas, all the courses he had played were closed and he was forced to hit from a stall at a practice facility.
He realized his swing was on vacation when he arrived in Tennessee last Wednesday. His coach was not available until Delaware. He quickly turned the situation around.
Spieth said, I feel like everything is going well, but nothing exceptional, but I feel like its trending, improving, and that I know what to do to make it even better. Its great. Its a great opportunity for everyone to have a lot more trust and to focus on winning this tournament, not worrying about next week.
Scheffler was also not cut last week but joined Spieth and others at Pine Valley Sunday. He opened with three birdies and didnt make many mistakes throughout the round. He will join Scott in the final group on Saturday.
Conner is No. Conner is at No. 29 and is in an excellent position to defend his position on East Lake. Young is a great player every week, winning twice in majors and five runner-up finishes. Young would be able to tick many boxes if he wins.
Xander SchauffeleHoled out with a wedge on 17th hole for an Eagle and a 70, and he was in the group two strokes behind the champion. Patrick Cantlay Rory McIlroyFor another 68, he chipped in for a birdie on the final hole.
Scott didn’t achieve a finish quite so good. He was enjoying a warm, breezy afternoon sailing when he decided to push his tee shot close to a tree. His lie was straight, but his shot toward the fairway was hung up by rough. He didnt get to the green or up-and-down from there, which resulted in a double bogey.
Scott said, Its good reminder for me for the weekend that my really got to control it and dont want too many get off track and get out position around here.
