Captain of Team Europe Luke DonaldHe will have twice as many captains picks when the 12-man team he puts together will face the United States next summer in Rome, Italy. Ryder Cup Europe announced this Tuesday.
Donald will now have six captains choices instead of three. This is because the total number was revealed in the 2023 Ryder Cup qualification process. There will be three automatic qualifiers from the top three players on the European Points List, and then three from the top three on world points lists.
The qualification period for Team Europe will begin at next weeks BMW PGA Championship and end three weeks ahead of the biennial competition being held at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in late September next year.
Donald said in a press release, The six picks give us flexibility to ensure that we have the strongest lineup at Marco Simone in terms in-form players and Ryder Cup-experienced players, and potential pairings.
Modifying the European Points List will improve the chance of DP World Tour players playing predominantly on the DP World Tour to make it to the Ryder Cup team through any one of the three spots that are available from that list.
We have also moved forward the end of the qualification to give the players the proper amount of preparation time once they have been made the team.
LIV golfers will not be selected. However, LIV players can still qualify for Ryder Cup through points.
As a replacement, Donald was named Team Europes captain just four weeks ago. Henrik StensonHe was removed from the position in July, shortly after he announced that the LIV Golf Invitational Series was his new venture.
Team Europe, led by Padraig harrington as their captain, lost 19-9 to USA in September. They have not lost a Ryder Cup home since that 15-13 defeat at The Belfry back in 1993.
