After playing the South Courses opening round at 1-over-73, Rahm tied for 116th. He was one short of the cut line, with five holes remaining on his second round on Santa Ana winds North Course. On Thursday, he made an eagle and then made three consecutive birdies. He has played his 23 last holes in 11 under.

The Spanish star was 5-under 31 on the South Course, which hosts two rounds on Friday, thanks to three straight birdies, and then the eagle on September 9.

His second shot on ninth, a draw at 289 yards from the green, was deemed to be his best shot of the year. I was just hoping to hit it on the green center, but I mean I tattooed that 5-wood, and ended up with 10 feet for the eagle. Although you don’t really expect that on a back pin, I ended in a great place and made the putt.

Rahm said that he is a very aggressive player by natural means, so nothing really changes. I just try to stay true to myself and the difference between the next four holes and the previous three was just making better swings at a good time.

Rahm is aiming to win his 10th PGA Tour title. Ryder, 33 years old, is aiming for his first PGA Tour victory.

Rahm stated that he is calm and collected. Rahm said, Yeah theres pressure for obvious items, but I won my last two tournaments so I have every reason to believe that its possible to do it again. Ive been swinging it beautifully throughout the week so hopefully tomorrow it will be as good as it was last week.

Ryder was in the lead after the first round, sharing it with two other players. He was up by three strokes after 36 holes.

He said that today it was just a different level pressure. I didn’t feel pressured to do anything or press for anything, so I didn’t panic when my bogey was on 2. I just adjusted to it and started to feel more comfortable with my swing. The day started with a lead and ended with a lead.
