Jon Rahm 2 back of Sam Ryder at Torrey Pines after 3rd-round charge

SAN DIEGO Jon RahmA 6-under 66 on Friday at Torrey Pines was his best round, bringing him within two shots on the leaderboard. Sam RyderAfter the third round of Farmers Insurance Open.

Rahm, ranked No. Rahm, ranked 3 in the World, is only 18 holes away from winning his third consecutive start and taking over as No. 1 for the first times since March 20. After a par-5 ninth hole eagle, he moved to second place.

Rahm was enjoying a calm, beautiful day on the municipal course overlooking Pacific Ocean. Ryder, however, parred his last 12 holes for 72. He missed a 10-foot birdie on the par-5 18. Ryder was 12-under 204 through 54 hole, while Rahm had a total of 10 under.

Tony FinauTwelve shots back, he began his third round on the back 9. He shot 4-under 32, then shot his approach from 138 feet on the par-4 second hole for an eagle. To move into third place, he shot an 8-under 64, his best round on the South Course.

To avoid the NFLs conference championship games, this tournament is played from Wednesday to Saturday in the past two seasons.

Rahm at Torrey Pines has had an adventurous three days. He won his first PGA Tour win in 2017, and then won the U.S. Open 2021, his first major.

Rahm said Torrey Pines was his favorite venue before I ever did any, really. This is a beautiful golf course. It suits my strengths. I think I have done very well here because I like it so much.

After playing the South Courses opening round at 1-over-73, Rahm tied for 116th. He was one short of the cut line, with five holes remaining on his second round on Santa Ana winds North Course. On Thursday, he made an eagle and then made three consecutive birdies. He has played his 23 last holes in 11 under.

The Spanish star was 5-under 31 on the South Course, which hosts two rounds on Friday, thanks to three straight birdies, and then the eagle on September 9.

His second shot on ninth, a draw at 289 yards from the green, was deemed to be his best shot of the year. I was just hoping to hit it on the green center, but I mean I tattooed that 5-wood, and ended up with 10 feet for the eagle. Although you don’t really expect that on a back pin, I ended in a great place and made the putt.

Rahm said that he is a very aggressive player by natural means, so nothing really changes. Rahm won the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Kapalua three weekends back and The American Express last weekend in the Coachella Valley. I just try to stay true to myself and the difference between the next four holes and the previous three was just making better swings at a good time.

Rahm is aiming to win his 10th PGA Tour title. Ryder, 33 years old, is aiming for his first PGA Tour victory.

Rahm stated that he is calm and collected. Rahm said, Yeah theres pressure for obvious items, but I won my last two tournaments so I have every reason to believe that its possible to do it again. Ive been swinging it beautifully throughout the week so hopefully tomorrow it will be as good as it was last week.

Ryder was in the lead after the first round, sharing it with two other players. He was up by three strokes after 36 holes.

He said that today it was just a different level pressure. I didn’t feel pressured to do anything or press for anything, so I didn’t panic when my bogey was on 2. I just adjusted to it and started to feel more comfortable with my swing. The day started with a lead and ended with a lead.
