Rusty Strawn wins U.S. Senior Amateur over Doug Hanzel for first USGA title

MARION, Mass. Rusty Strawn won five out of six holes and never trailed in Thursdays 3-and-2 win over Doug Hanzel in The Kittansett Clubs U.S. Senior Amateur final.

The 59-year old Strawn won his first USGA title in a battle between Georgia residents.

Hanzel, who became the only player to qualify in the U.S. 10 years ago, is Hanzel. Amateur, U.S. Mid-Amateur, and U.S. Senior Amateur had four bogeys in five of the first holes and never recovered.

Strawn was 5 ahead at the turn of the 18-hole match. Hanzel was 3 up with five holes left. Strawn won 14th with a par.

Hanzel won in 2013 the U.S. Senior Amateur.

Strawns victory will get him into the U.S. Senior Open in Wisconsin next year at SentryWorld, where he will be in the same group as Padraig Harrington, Senior Open champion, and Darren Clarke.
