Russell Henley coasts to PGA Tour win in Mayakoba

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico — Russell HenleyHe finally made a birdie, and that was it for Sunday. He closed with a 1-under 70 to win the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba by four shots.

Henley was leading by six shots going into the final round at El Camaleon. He lost a 5-foot putt on the par-5 5th hole to reduce his lead to three.

He responded with three straight birdies. No one else was able to get closer than four shots for the remainder of the round.

Henley won for the fourth consecutive time on the PGA Tour and for the first time since the Houston Open five year ago.

Henley had at most a share of 54-hole lead the five previous times he played, but he didnt win the title. The Sony Open in Jan was the most recent. Hideki MatsuyamaHe overcame a two-shot deficit to win a playoff.

Henley smiled and said, I just tried learning from my past mistakes. All those events I didn’t close out, they hurt. You never know what youll win next. It was cool to come down 18 with a 4-shot lead.

Henley tied the tournament record at 23-under 261 Henley was the only player not to have made a bogey during the entire week.

Henley will also be sent to Kapalua in January to participate in the Sentry Tournament of Champions. This is the first high-profile event in a year of large purses.
