Tiger Woods has a lot of work to do at The Open, and here is how his second round is going

Table of Contents

Tiger Woods spent months pondering about this topic The Open at St. Andrews. He did everything to ensure that he reached the Old Course to play in the oldest major championship of golf.

Once he arrived in Scotland, he did everything possible to make a solid run. He practiced more on-site than he did the Masters and PGA Championship. To make sure he was ready for The Open, he skipped the U.S. Open.

However, his game never responded when it mattered. Woods finished his first round 78 with an over-par 75 to miss the cut.

Heres how his second round ended:

No. 1: Par 4, 375 yards

St. Andrews first hole is easier if the tee shot does not land in a new divot. Woods tee ball found a divot on Thursday, and his second shot went in the burn. He then walked off with a terrible double-bogey. Friday was much more uneventful with no divot. An unhurried approach to the green and a faster pace with the putter resulted in a smooth par.

Woods walks with his hands in his pockets, his shoulders tightened, and seems cold on a cold morning in Scotland. Woods swing is free at first, however. He was able to birdie with a solid drive, and a controlled approach to the irons. The 20-footer fell out. Woods will have to get in some of those, a lot of them, if he wants to make it.

Woods didnt waste any time with his third shot at 101 yards. He moved away from the hole and faced an uphill 25-footer for birdie. He is seeing improvement in his putter, which caused him many problems on Thursday. He putt the putt in order to get into red numbers.

Woods hated his second shot. How do we know that? He slammed the club into the ground as the approach was still in play. He was not the last to be upset at the hole. He was able to par with a solid putt off the green. He missed it.

No. 5: Par 5, 570 yards

Woods hit a massive 3-wood into the green. The ball settled approximately 6 feet from the pin. The problem was that the pin was wrong. The Old Course has two greens, the fifth being the fifth. It is shared with 13th. Woods ball continued to move onto the green, and it did so. It was now 7 feet from hole 13 and 117 feet from hole 5. The ridiculously long eagle hole putt was just 10 feet short. The birdie that was easier to manage just missed on the right side.

Woods has been able move well with his right leg after surgery during his time in Scotland. His misjudged tee shot resulted in him landing in one of the fairway bunkers. This caused a grimace, and the most severe limp of the week. He didnt have any chance of reaching the green and he simply pitched out. He put another bogey on his scorecard when it was over.

Woods got rid his jacket after the spitting rain subsided following a dark and rainy morning. Woods game didnt improve. He had just 97 yards left for his second shot but hit the wedge on the wrong side of the slope to leave a longer-than-he-wanted birdie putt.

Woods played a boring hole, perhaps for the first round. He found the greens middle. He narrowly missed a 30-footer to birdie. A ho-hum par.

As play was backed up, there was a lot more standing around on the fairway. Woods drive was just short of the green. The problem that plagued Woods for the last 27 holes of this major championship returned. Woods has struggled to judge his speed when he putsts or plays pitch shots from the green. His ninth attempt was disappointing. He missed a 25-footer, which was a better birdie putt.

Woods opened what will probably be his last nine holes on competitive golf with a routine hole. Fairway hit. Center of green. Drama-free two-putt.

Woods was cautious in his approach shots throughout the second round. He seemed content to aim for the middle of the green. He went flag-hunting at 11th. The tee shot failed and fell into the big-pot bunker. Woods, however, made the putt for an unthinkable par by blasting it out to 12ft.

Woods cannot understand the green speeds. Woods second shot into the green was a huge bounce. He ended up with a 40-footer to birdie. He missed the putt again. He managed to make the 6-footer for par but it was a lot more work that it needed.

Woods would normally feel good about a drive of 370 yards, even if it ended in the hay next the fairway. He then compared it with the 412 yards he had just one day earlier. His second shot on Friday found another one of St. Andrews famous bunkers. He converted the 412-yard drive he made on Thursday into a birdie. He couldnt do the same with Fridays 370-yard drive.

Another hole, another long birdie. Woods missed a short wedge approach that was well beyond the hole. This one came after he skipped it. He almost hit the 77-footer but it fell a few rolls short.

The good news? Woods misshit iron on the 16th green was not good enough to make it in a bunker. The bad news? His chip shot did. A missed shot and a blast out led to an ugly double.

Tiger Woods is the only one who knows if this was his last trip to St. Andrews. Woods enjoyed the walk over Swilcan Bridge, up the final fairway, and the soaking in of the scenery. As he lifted his cap, he wept and waved to the cheering crowd along the Old Course. He gave them something to cheer with a perfectly small, only-on-links golf chip with a 4-iron to the short range. He missed the birdie putt, as was his week.

It was all the feels to see Tiger Woods walk up No. 18 at St. Andrews 👏
